Coming across a whole rack full of Xserves and Xserve RAID equipment recently had me thinking. It’s a bit like coming across a feral colony of cats in the midst of an abandoned barn, in my nerdy little head. They were all still running, and of course, passworded up, and in my head I wondered if I wasn’t really uncovering a piece of archaeological history; as if there was a society still alive deep within the now-absent company’s remaining digital footprint.
And, there were old Macs galore, iMacs of various varietals, from CRT to goose-neck. A few old G4 towers, and a G5 tower. Each of these boxes is of limited utility and dubious resale value, so it’s not clear what will happen to them all.
It’s weird what people see in the remains of dead companies.
