So Ira and David Krasnow and Rex Doane wrote and produced several spots featuring Alec and a bunch of public radio hosts and announcers. Maybe you heard these spots on the radio. At least they closed the door to the car. At least they left my petitions in the back seat under my jacket.

Some days, I get up knowing it’s going to be cold, that my already-chapped lips will hurt even more, and I go out into the city I love anyway. Most of those days, I’m wearing my “DC Armor.” It’s a now-faded t-shirt with a heart surrounding the flag of the District. I wear it when I need to love my city, when it’s hard to do so.

I put on my shirt, I put on the button down, and grabbed my coat to stand at the metro and get signatures for my candidate for council. The wind bit. The cold soaked in. But I did not stop smiling. I never stop when I’m wearing my DC Armor.

When I got back from the metro, 40 signatures in hand, I grabbed my phone and checked my email. There was a note from a 17-year old Ohio resident who reads We Love DC every day. She was born in the city, but moved to Ohio when she was 5. She said, “ It’s the city that holds all of my greatest memories, hopes, and dreams for the future”

Oh yes.

Oh that.

DC is a place of dreams.

That is why I put on my DC Armor and go out into the cold.

Sorry if this was too much sappy for your morning.

Seriously? I label this extrovert-shaming. I don’t care if it is intended as a joke, it’s offensive.

Just because introverts can’t understand extroverts doesn’t mean we are shallow idiots.

fedward:

That said, I just googled and essentially every recipe I found for a ‘cello said to combine the peel (or the zest) with the booze and let it sit for some amount of time (minimum of a couple weeks, in general), and so if nothing else the way you’re doing it is the way countless Italians have done it, and thus certainly Not Wrong.

The A-B test I’d design would probably be something like an A-B-C test, in the end: A) do what you’re doing; B) using the same amount of sugar you’d use, first make an oleo-saccharum, then add the same amount of hot water, stir to dissolve the sugar, let cool, add booze, steep the whole mess for however long; C) make the oleo-saccharum, add the hot water, stir to dissolve sugars, cool, strain, add booze. Or, if you’re feeling truly ambitious, strain out the peels, add a shot of booze to the syrup (to prevent spoilage), then combine the somewhat-spent peels and the booze and steep that mess for however long (storing the syrup in the fridge for as long as that takes).

So, four tests. Are you America’s Test Kitchen?

You have piqued my curiosity. The oil in a citrus peel isn’t very soluble in water, which is why punches are best made with an oleo-saccharum (muddle peels with sugar and let rest, and the sugar extracts the oil for you). Now I want to A-B test this.

Is the concern that the simple syrup won’t bond to the infused alcohol properly? Or is the concern that the alcohol won’t accept the citrus oils in the lime peels?

barackobama:
